Treatment Of TMJ Syndrome (Clenching/Grinding)

Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) syndrome is a disorder of the jaw muscles and nerves caused by injury or inflammation to the temporomandibular joint. The temporomandibular joint is the connection between the jawbone and the skull.

TMJ Syndrome Symptoms

When the joint becomes inflamed, injured, or stressed it can cause pain in the ear or face. The discomfort is often an ache mixed with sudden sharp pains. Symptoms can include:

-Ear pain and fullness

-Sore jaw muscles

-Temple/cheek pain 

-Jaw popping/clicking 

-Locking of the jaw 

-Difficulty in opening the mouth fully 

-Frequent head/neck ache

If you habitually clench, grit, or grind your teeth, you increase the wear on the cartilage lining of the joint. Many persons are unaware that they grind their teeth, unless someone tells them. Clenching or grinding your teeth while you sleep, may be causing your migraines, and or sensitivity of your teeth.

At Dental Solutions, treatment for TMJ syndrome includes the fabrication of custom-fitted partial or full mouth night guards that are easy to wear while you sleep . We also offer orthotics for treating snoring and sleep apnea .
